Redstone Arsenal / Huntsville Arsenal

Redstone Arsenal was originally a federal factory complex built in 1941. The two factories faced each other. Huntsville Arsenal produced poison gas and mortar/howitzer shells. Redstone Ordnance Plant assembled those shells into an explosive charge that made them a finished artillery round. The latter factory was renamed Redstone Arsenal in 1943. After the war, this complex became a collection location for chemical weapons. Huntsville Arsenal was closed in 1949 and merged with Redstone Arsenal. In 1950 Dr. Werner von Braun with other scientists moved to this area. US federal governments (such as NASA) soon followed suit.
