Maxwell Air Force Base

Maxwell Air Force Base (or Maxwell Field as it was called during WW2) originated from a flying school established in 1910, which was renamed Maxwell Field in 1922. In 1931, the Army Air Corps moved its prestigious post-grad school, the Tactical School, here from Langley Field. During that time, Maxwell field was a showplace for the Air Corps and headquarters for the Eastern Flying Training Command. The tactical school was moved to Orlando, FL in 1940, but Maxwell remained a main complex for training purposes. In 1941 Maxwell became an AAF Reception Center and during the war thousands of U.S. & Allied pilots trained here. Maxwell also became one of the few B-29 training facilities in late 1944. Since then, the USAF remained here and the base is still operation.
