Merced-Castle Airport / Merced Army Air Field

Merced-Castle Airport was in use as the Air Corps Basic Flying School, Merced, at the start of the war. The airfield was renamed Merced Army Air Field in April 1942. During the war, a large number of air force personnel were trained here, including a number of the Women's Air Service Pilots (WASPs). Merced Army Air Field was expanded in the summer of 1945. The airfield was transferred to the U.S. Air Force in January 1948 and subsequently renamed "Castle Air Force Base". The airbase was finally closed in the 1990s. Auxialiary fields of Merced:
