Port Chicago Naval Magazine

The Port Chicago Naval Magazine was built in 1942 as a subbase of Naval Ammunition Depot Mare Island. On July 17, 1944, an accident occurred at Pier #1. Two freighters and a train exploded while loading ammunition. The disaster claimed the lives of 320 people. Much of Port Chicago was destroyed. The naval magzine continued to operate and was renamed U.S. Naval Weapons Station concord. Pier #1 was never rebuilt and its remains can be seen protruding above the water.
