Commemorative Plate Bomber B-17G Moerbeke-Waas

Commemorative plaque on the left at the entrance of the forecourt of the church in Moerbeke-Waas, hamlet Kruisstraat.

On May 27, 1944, the bomber B-17G 42-38055 of Lt. Roger W. Birkman crashed in the Bovenhoek (Overslag) where the crew came down with parachutes in Moerbeke-Waas.
Five crew members escaped and five were taken prisoner. The crew included: Lt Roger W. Birkman (pil), Lt Alexander Kucherenko (co-pil), Lt Michael N. Stanko (nav), Lt James M. Cochran (bomb), Sgt Raymond Koch (eng), Sgt Andrew Kafka (rad), Sgt John L. Toney (gun), Sgt James C. Jones (gun), Sgt John Buechel (gun), Sgt Errol Bailey (gun).
