No 88 Maintenance Unit Air Sea Rescue

RAF Meikle Ferry was established by the RAF at the ferry pier. No 88 Maintenance Unit Air Sea Rescue operated the base from January 1942 until its closure in February 1946. Up to three fast motorboats operated in an air sea rescue at sea.

The base consisted of two jetties/ramps, a large repair/maintenance shed, a number of buildings housing officers and men, a canteen and a cooking house. The base also had a small floating dock.

The large shed appears to be a standard building for Air Sea Rescue Station, with an observation post on the roof.

On the approach road are five craftsmen's huts, a standard RAF hut made of trough-shaped asbestos sheets bolted together to form a seven-sided roofed building in section with end walls of rendered brick. The five cabins appear to be in good condition, but some windows and doorways are bricked up and one cabin has a chimney. Hut bases can be seen at each end of the row.
