Bunker Castle of Vezio

The Cadorna Defense Line and the Underground of the Castle, the northern border, known as the Cadorna Line, is a complex of permanent defenses placed around the Po Valley.
The emplacement at the Castello di Vezio belonged to Sector V, Mera-Adda, and was defended by 149/A guns, one of the longest-used and most widely distributed artillery of the Royal Army during World War I and then World War II. The caliber was 149 mm, the range was about 17 km, but it managed to fire an average of only one shot every 5 minutes. 75 mm howitzers were placed in the cellars.
It is quite likely that the emplacement in the Castello di Vezio was built by adapting an unspecified pre-existing underground structure of unknown origin. Some tunnels built under the hill of Vezio, many still visible, open into the "plain of Vezio", while others, now collapsed and lost, connected the castle with Varenna, Perledo and Fiumelatte, giving the possibility in case of enemy attack to get to safety or fight back in case of siege.
