Stanton Shelter Rye

Just above Camber Castle is this small concrete hut.
During the Second World War, an attempt was made at this location to provoke bombing in order to spare the city and nearby harbour. The site was built in July 1942 as temporary Starfish Site No. 78 in response to the Luftwaffe's Baedeker Raids.
The Starfish spout worked by lighting a series of controlled fires during an airstrike to mimic an urban area targeted by bombs.
This small concrete building with the curved roof is a Stanton Shelter that formed the operating room and sheltered the crew.
The adjacent wall with three holes in it is what remains of the generator building. In May 1943 it was turned into a No. 651 'QL' decoy site as part of the Fortitude South D-Day deception plan in preparation for the invasion of Normandy. It was abandoned in February 1945.
