Crashsite P-47 Thunderbolt s/nr 44-20040

A memorial in Wittisheim opposite the Koba Wakepark regarding the crash of a P-47 Thunderbolt s/nr 44-20040. The pilot, Henri Bassompierre-Sewrin, was killed. Eight P-47s of fighter squadron 2/3 Dauphiné, had taken off on 9 January 1945 from their base in Luxieul. Their mission was to harass enemy positions in the woods around Wittisheim. A convoy of German trucks on the road between Wittisheim and Muttersholz was also attacked. Reportedly, the P-47 was hit by anti-aircraft fire and crashed.
Fate was not favorable to the pilot this time, as it was two weeks earlier: Henri had to make an emergency landing near Saone with another P-47 s/nr 42-26510. He survived this crash.
