Monument Destruction Fuel Storage

This memorial commemorates the units that destroyed the large American fuel depot of several million liters. This storage was here along the road. The destruction happened before Peiper's battle group arrived.
Peiper reached Stavelot on December 17, 1944. On the night of the 17th, his battle group tried to cross the bridge that would have given him access to the fuel depot. The use of this storage would have enabled his advance far beyond the Meuse .
Major Solis gave the order to blow up the bridge. As this was not entirely successful, he ordered the Belgian 5th Battalion under his command to set fire to the fuel depot, destroying it completely.
