Memorial Gunnar Sonsteby

Monument Gunnar Sonsteby

Originally in Solli Plass alongside the statue of Winston Churchill, unveiled in 2007 by King Harald V. On Constitution Day, 17 May 2013, during a large outdoor party the statue was apparently vandalised, the front wheel being broken off and the statue stolen. The wheel was recovered and 2 weeks later the statue was found broken and lying in Solli Plass. An embarrassed mother later admitted that her 4 year old son had climbed onto the statue and knocked it over.
The statue was repaired by the artist (Per Ung) and repositioned in its current location, Karl Johans Gate, scene of the photograph that inspired the statue.

Statue commemorates the service of Gunnar Sonsteby in the Norwegian resistance movement and Norwegian Independent Company 1 (Kompani Linge) during 1940-1945. Sonsteby became Norways most highly decorated citizen.
