Crash Site Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter A1925 45 Sqn

Second Lieutenant Robert Smith BENNIE and his observer Lieutenant Thomas Arthur METHERAL (45 Squadron RFC) crashed nearby in Sopwith 1½ Strutter A1925 on 5 June 1917. It happened in a dogfight with Jagdstaffel 11 and Jagdstaffel 18 during a photo reconnaissance above Menin railway station.
Until 1915 they were buried at the German Ehrenfriedhof Nr. 49 alongside Magerheidestraat. Their final resting place is now Cement House Cemetery in Langemark.
Robert BENNIE came from Leamington (Canada), Thomas METHERAL from Moosejaw (Canada).
