Information Sign Ny-Alesund Museum

"The roughly 80 residents of Ny-Alesund were evacuated to Britain in September 1941. Until then, World War 2 had not changed the life of the mining community, but when Germany declared war on the Soviet Union, Svalbard became strategically important and the entire population was evacuated. No soldiers were based in Ny-Alesund during the war. In 1943 German soldiers from the submarine 'U-302' burned the hospital and two houses."
