Museum Reina Sofia

The painting Guernica by Pablo Picasso hangs in this museum. He had been commissioned by the Republican Government to create a painting for the Spanish Pavilion at the 1937 Expo in Paris. After the (German) bombing of Guernica (Spanish Basque Country), which caused horror worldwide, he chose this as a subject. The 3.49 x 7.76 meter painting shows the horrors of a bombing.

After the exhibition, the painting traveled around the world and was eventually exhibited in New York. Picasso had stipulated that the painting would go to Spain as soon as democracy had been restored there. This was the case in 1975 after Franco's death and after much discussion and controversy the painting went to Spain in 1981.

In the room next door you can see numerous Republican posters and other publications calling for struggle and solidarity, such as the slogan "No Pasaran".
