Stumbling Stones Rembrandtlaan 20

This small brass plaque (Stolperstein or Stumbling Stone), which was laid on 7-10-2019 commemorates:

PIETER HARKEMA (born 1920, arrested 16-5-1944, succumbed 13-3-1945 Zöschen)

This Stolperstein is here for a Merwedegijzelelaar.

Merwedegijzelaars were young men who were rounded up during a raid on May 16, 1944 in retaliation for two land guard members killed in gunfight with the resistance on the night of May 9 -10, 1944.

"Stolpersteine" is an art project in Europe by Gunter Demnig commemorating victims of National Socialism (Nazism).
Stolpersteine (trip stones) are small, 10x10cm brass plaques placed in the sidewalk in front of a residence of (mostly Jewish) victims murdered by the Nazis. Each plaque is engraved with the victim's name, date of birth and place (usually a concentration camp) and date of death. In this way, Gunter Demnig gives an individual memorial to each victim. One stone, one name, one person. He quotes the Talmud: "A person is forgotten only when his or her name is forgotten."
