Royal Navel Division Monument

This memorial was erected to honor the Officers and Men of the Royal Naval Division who died during the Battle of the Ancre (tributary of the Somme) as part of the big Somme offensive.

In 1914, the British Navy had a large number of reservists for whom there was no room on the ships at that time. It was decided to deploy these men as Infantry within the Royal Naval Division created specifically for that purpose. The Division fought in Belgium, Gallipoli and on the Somme, among other places.
