Memorial Villers-sur-Semois

There is a memorial plaque on the St. Martin's Church in Villers-sur-Semois:

"The veterans
of the 5th Cuirassier Regiment
To their comrades
died in this
village
on May 10, 1940"

During the Second World War, on May 10, 1940, the day of the outbreak of the 18-day campaign, the French from the 2nd squadron of the 5th Cuirassier Regiment came to defend Villers-sur-Semois.
The village was attacked in the afternoon by the Germans of the Infanterie-Regiment Grossdeutschland, who had to recapture it a second time with the support of two Sturmgeschütz III to force the defenders to withdraw, not without losses for the latter, there were nine deaths.
