Memorial Charles Simonet Mons

There is a monument to the named person on Place Simonet.

Charles Simonet was a day laborer in Mons and worked for British intelligence.
On June 20, 1915, he was arrested by the German police after betrayal and executed in Brussels on November 6, 1915.
Initially he was buried in Schaerbeek.
In May 1919 his body was repatriated by train to Mons.
He was posthumously appointed Knight in the Order of Leopold.

This allegory of freedom is a sculpture by Gustave Jacobs. A character holds the flag at arm's length, the flagpole is decorated with oak leaves.

At the back hangs a plate with a French inscription:

"1914 - 1918
CHARLES SIMONET
of the Intelligence Service (British Intelligence)
Born in Bergen on September 26, 1872
Shot by the Germans at the National Shooting Range
from Brussels on November 6, 1915
because he refused to indict his leaders
and reveal the secrets in his possession."
