The Second Battle of El Alamein took place between October 23 and November 3, 1942 during the North African Campaign of World War II. The battle was fought between the Axis powers of the Italian-German Armored Army led by Field Marshal Erwin Rommel and the British Eighth Army of General Bernard Law Montgomery.
Field Marshal Rommel's Italo-German armored army was eventually pushed back. The British victory in this battle marked the turning point in the North African campaign, which ended in May 1943 with the final surrender of the Axis powers in Tunisia.
