Memorial Operation Red Wings

In the same park where the monument in memory of Danny Dietz stands, there is also a monument that commemorates the victims of Operation Red Wings.
During this mission, the 4-man SEAL team was attacked by the Taliban and after their call for assistance was received, a Quick Reaction Force of 8 SEAL members with a Chinook from the 160th SOAR Army Night Stalkers was sent to their rescue.
This helicopter was shot down with an RPG by the Taliban and all 8 SEALS and the 8 crew members of 160th SOAR were killed.
Of the 4-man SEAL team, Matthew G. Axelson, team leader Navy Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy and Danny Dietz were killed. Only Marcus Luttrel survived.
This mission was made into a film based on Marcus Luttrell's book "Lone survivor: the eyewitness account of Operation Redwing and the lost heroes of SEAL Team 10".
