Bunker de Vlijt

Bunker De Vlijt on Texel is a unique and historic location that takes you back to World War II, specifically to the Georgian uprising in April 1945. This uprising was one of the last battlefields in Europe during the war, and the bunker was an important place for the Georgian soldiers who hid here. The bunker is part of the Atlantic Wall, the line of defence built by the Germans along the western European coast.

The bunker offers a unique 3D audio experience in which you can hear the story of the uprising, told by Jetty Bakker, a young Texel resident who translated English radio messages for the Georgian rebels during the uprising. This experience is special because it gives you a glimpse into the history of the islanders and their involvement in the war.

The audio tour lasts about half an hour and is only accessible to visitors aged 13 and above. It is an impressive way to learn more about the courageous Georgian soldiers and the local population of Texel during this dramatic period. The experience is available from Wednesday to Saturday and on Sundays, but due to limited space, it is advisable to arrive on time.

Bunker De Vlijt is located at Postweg 126 in De Cocksdorp, opposite the Texel Aviation and War Museum, and the audio tour can only be done in combination with a ticket to the museum. It is a must-see for anyone interested in World War II and the role Texel played in this period of history.

For current visiting hours, please visit the website of the museum.
