Korea War Grave Wetteren

At the Wetteren cemetery, at the back of the large Eighteen of August monument, lies the grave of the only Wetteren victim of the 'forgotten war', namely the Korean victim Camiel BRAECKMAN, born in Wetteren in 1926.
He was already with the resistance during the Second World War. For example, he was partly responsible for blowing up the Scheldt Bridge, so that the German occupiers could no longer use it.
In early 1953, he left for the Korean War out of idealism and was immediately sent to the front line. A few months later, on April 8, 1953, he died there at the age of 27. In September he was buried with military honors in Wetteren.

In October 2021, at the request of Defense, the Korean fallen were commemorated for the first time. The intention is to recognize the graves of all these fallen soldiers everywhere in the country as a war grave, so that the grave can be protected as an eternal concession.
