Belgian War Graves Nieuwkerken-Waas

On the cemetery wall, to the right of the entrance, are several Belgian war graves from the First World War in a plot of honor.

On the right is the grave of Frans HEYRMAN, born in Nieuwkerken on June 24, 1894.
This farmer's son returned from the war as a war maimed.
He died on December 26, 1921, aged just 27.
The invalids' association of Sint-Niklaas placed a memorial stone at the grave.

Next to it is the grave of Alfons DE WITTE, soldier 2nd class with the 7th line regiment.
He was a farmer by profession.
"He died in glory for his homeland on the battlefield of Somemergem on November 7, 1918." He is said to have been killed in action on October 31, 1918, but buried on November 7.

The next memorial cross is for Richard DE JONGHE: sergeant 16th Line (foreman). Killed in action on October 31, 1918 at the age of 26.
He was initially buried in Ursel and later exhumed on December 4, 1918 and transferred to Nieuwkerken. His actual grave is located a little further in the cemetery.

There is also a memorial cross for Jozef METS. He succumbed in December 1921 due to hardship and abuse during the war.
