Bunker SB C Becco

Bunker SB C is located against a farm and is in use as a barn. The bunker belongs to sector Sougné-Becco (SB) of the 1st line of defense for the city of Liège, la Posistion Fortifiée de Liège 1, (PFL 1).

The walls and ceiling of the bunkers from the PFL line were 1.3 meters thick reinforced concrete. They could withstand shelling with 150mm shells. These bunkers were built in the early 1930's.These bunkers were built in the early 1930s.

The bunker is in use by the farm and is not accessible. The gully next to the entrance door is still visible as well as the gun opening and the ventilation holes.

The ventilation holes provided fresh air on the one hand and, on the other hand, exhaust fumes resulting from machine gun salvos. In no time, the room would be full of smoke gases, which was intoxicating to the soldiers present.

The grenade gully, for close combat defense, came out at a hatch (see, for example, bunker SB D photo 5) inside the bunker. One could drop a hand grenade through this gully. This then fell out through the opening at the bottom of the bunker.

As with most bunkers, after the war when the bunkers had lost their strategic value, the metal hatches and doors were removed and sold as scrap metal. It also happened that during the war the bunkers were stripped of iron by the Germans and melted down for other purposes. If cast-iron observation turrets were present, they were reused at the atlantikwal, among others.
