Former Munich Airport

In 1936, a location southeast of Riem was chosen for a new airport, where architect Ernst Sagebiel began planning. Construction began in 1937, with an opening planned for September 1, 1939. Due to the outbreak of World War II, operations were postponed until October 25, 1939. During the war, Munich-Riem served as an airbase and was bombed several times. Despite this, civilian air traffic remained active until April 9, 1945, when the facilities were almost completely destroyed. After the American occupation, the airport was given the Allied code designation Advanced Landing Ground ALG R-82.

Munich-Riem airport was closed on May 16, 1992, at midnight.
