Memorial French Refugees Hotton

There is a gravestone at the front of Hotton cemetery:

"Tribute to France
Pious memory
to the French refugees
died here during the Great War.

BOUILLET Eugene
BLICK Sophie
BERGMAN Constantin
RENARD Colette
LALLEMAND Louise
BERGMAN Madeleine
CLARISSE Sophie"
followed by their place of origin and year of birth and death.

There is also an information board next to the gravestone:
"During the First World War, many French refugees were received in Belgium.
These people mainly came from the north of France and found shelter with us. During the euphoria of victory in 1918, this episode of the Great War was passed over and forgotten.

The people who died here were buried in the old cemetery next to the church.
Their ashes were later transferred to the new cemetery in Rue Haute.
One grave is still dedicated to them."
