James Ewell Brown (Jeb) Stuart (Patrick County (Virginia), February 6, 1833 – Richmond (Virginia), May 12, 1864) was an American general who fought on the side of the Confederacy during the American Civil War. As a cavalry commander, he made significant contributions to the Confederate war effort during the conflict.
During the Battle of Yellow Tavern, an encounter between the Confederate cavalry and that of Northern General Philip Sheridan, Stuart was killed at the age of 31.

As part of the BLM (Black Lives Matter) protests, the monument was removed from its pedestal on July 7, 2020.
