War Memorial Werpin

The war memorial of Werpin is located near the chapel of Saint Anna.
It was inaugurated with great ceremony on September 25, 1927.
The stele was made by stone cutter P. Dumont from Soy. The bust of soldier Emile Pierard at the top was sculpted by artist Ad.Sprumont from Ouffet.
Later the names of the other victims of the two world wars were added to the pedestal.

The monument pays tribute to Emile PIERARD, a soldier who died on the Yser
October 12, 1914.
The text on the information board reads:
"He had undergone his baptism of fire in Bioulx. On August 25, 1914, he walked more than 20 miles barefoot. We find him again in Dendermonde and later on the Yser.
On October 12, 1914, his superior, Lieutenant Wattelet, saw him from a hundred meters away. When he tries to reach him, he sees him falling right in front of the enemy.
He remains there, fatally struck, with a smile almost, on a pale face…."
