War Memorial City Hall Dunes

At the 'Place des Martyrs', a commemorative plaqueis attached to the City Hall, and alerts the passers-by to the terrible events that took place here on Friday, June 23th, 1944. No less more than two weeks after D-Day.

Having encountered much resistance from the local population, a company of the German 2nd SS division "Das Reich" rounded up all the defensible men of the village, and gathered them near the town hall.

They wanted to set an example and took harsh measures to suppress any opposition.

Eleven men were hung from the balcony without trial. A 12th resident, who managed to escape was beaten up after he was found. Two old men were also murdered in the fields.

Therefor, this square bears the name "Place des Martyrs," the square of martyrs.

The same day, German forces also killed in the nearby village of Saint-Sixte 14 Tziganes (Roma).
