Hermanus War Memorial

This monument made of rocks from the area and flanked by 2 cannons was erected in 1929 to commemorate the residents of Hermanus killed during the 1st World War. The plaque on the monument lists 11 names of those killed in the 1st World War. Later, the names of 15 World War II casualties were also added including that of Robert Bushell. He was one of the inventors of "The Great Escape"; the escape of 73 prisoners of war from Stalag Luft III. 50 of them were shot dead after being captured on Hitler's own orders.
