Crash Site Armstrong Whitworth Whitley V Z6811

The Armstrong Whitworth Whitley V Z6811 was a British bomber that was shot down during World War II. The aircraft had departed from RAF Dishforth in Yorkshire, England, on 18 August 1941, for a bombing mission to Cologne, Germany. Unfortunately, the aircraft was shot down by a German Messerschmitt Bf 110 and crashed the next day, on 19 August 1941, near Heumen in the province of Gelderland, Netherlands, near the Maas Canal.

Aircraft crew:
There were five crew members on board Whitley V Z6811:
• Sgt John Alexander Barrie Jamieson – Pilot (Killed)
• Sgt Howard Robert Franklin Johnston – Gunner (Killed)
• Sgt Angus Milne – (Killed)
• Sgt Frank William Coles – (P.O.W.)
• P/O Frederick Walter Shorrock – (P.O.W.)

Of the five crew members, three were killed, while the other two, Frank Coles and Frederick Shorrock, survived and were taken prisoner by the Germans.
