Memorial General Ivan Petrov

In the Mestský Park there is a statue of General Ivan Petrov who was the commander of the 4th Ukrainian Front which liberated Košice on January 19, 1945.

On January 17, 1945, the liberation of Košice began with an outflanking movement from the south, with units of the 237th and 318th infantry divisions entering on the morning of January 19. In the end there was no heavy fighting for the city, but 3,000 soldiers died in the battle for the city and the surrounding area.
