Memorial Vittel

This memorial against the wall next to the train track contains the following text;

The train convoy with 650 Jews and resistance fighters, which had left Lyon on the orders of SS officer Klaus Barbie and was heading for the camps, stopped at Vittel station.

They bravely intervened, even risking their lives. Mrs. Germaine Bouloumie, president of the Vittel Committee of the Red Cross and her brother Jean Bouloumi, mayor of Vittel, to help deportees, victims of se Nazi barbarity, before the train resumed its death journey.

Klaus Barbie was sentenced to life in prison for crimes against humanity on July 4, 1987, by the Rhone Court of Assizes.
