Memorial Carl von Ossietsky Esterwegen

This memorial on the grounds of the former cemetery of the concentration camp commemorates the resistance fighter, pacifist and Nobel Prize winner Carl von Ossietsky. As publisher and editor-in-chief of “Die Weltbühne”, his strong pacifist views regularly brought him into conflict with the authorities. In 1934, he was imprisoned by the Nazis in Esterwegen, where he was severely mistreated. In 1 May 1936, under international pressure, he was transferred to an “ordinary” prison in Berlin and released from there after a short time (presumably because of the Olympic Games). He died in 1938 as a result of tuberculosis he had contracted in the camp.
