RAF Finningley opened in 1936 and was operational until 1996. During the First World War, there was already a Royal Flying Corps Station nearby at Brancroft Farm.
During the Second World War, the base was under the command of RAF Bomber Command. Pilots were trained here, among other things.
Today it is a commercial airport, some buildings on the site still date from the war.
