Barnes Wallis Memorial Herne Bay

This statue of Sir Barnes Wallis stands near Reculver, where the "bouncing bomb" was tested. This mine was crucial during Operation Chastise in breaking the Ruhr dams. Wallis was involved in the development of this bomb and other explosives during the war.

The statue at the intersection of Canterbury Road and Beacon Hill is a highlight of the new Herne Bay Cultural Trail. Chris West from the Herne Bay Town Partners described it as "the jewel in the crown of the trail," symbolizing Barnes Wallis's connection to the town. Sculptor Tom White traveled from America for its unveiling in 2008.

The statue shows Sir Wallis looking out to sea, with a telescope around his neck and his hands on his hips.

The text on the statue:

"Sir Barnes Neville Wallis 1887-1979 Scientist, engineer and inventor. Most noted for his invention of the bouncing bomb used in the dambuster raids. American Sculptor, Tom White."
