Bandaranaike International Airport

The airfield was established in 1944 as an RAF base during World War II and housed several squadrons until 1950. In 1957, Prime Minister Bandaranaike transferred all British military airfields in Ceylon to the Royal Ceylon Air Force. The base was renamed Katunayake and is still partly in military use today.
