During World War I, an internment camp for enemy foreigners was set up here in Diyatalawa. At the beginning of World War II, the camp was reopened for German citizens from Hong Kong and Singapore, including some German Buddhist monks with British citizenship.
The Germans were separated into pro- and anti-Nazi groups, and there was also a separate section for Italian prisoners of war. After Japanese bombardments, the prisoners were transferred to camps in India. The camp was also used for officer training during the war.
