Scafell Hotel

The Scafell Hotel, located in Rosthwaite, Borrowdale, is a historic establishment set in the heart of the Lake District, surrounded by mountains and peaceful meadows. Originally built as a private residence for the artist Mary Barker in the early 19th century, the property later became a coaching inn before evolving into the hotel it was until 2024.

The hotel has long been associated with Sir Barnes Wallis, the inventor of the bouncing bomb used in Operation Chastise. Wallis was a frequent visitor for over 52 years, often using a large table in his room to continue his engineering work when the weather was poor.

The Scafell Hotel in Rosthwaite, Borrowdale has closed permanently as of January 6, 2024, after more than 50 years in operation. The owners decided to sell the business.
