Monument for the Fallen Partisans Bologna

Soon after the liberation of Bologna in April 1945, relatives of partisans hanged in this square or shot dead against this wall began placing flowers and hanging pictures of the dead.

What began at the time as an impromptu commemoration of those killed on this spot expanded to include the more than 2,000 men and women from Bologna who were part of the resistance movement. Their images, protected behind glass, still stare at passers-by today.

Above the huge gallery of photographs is the inscription:
'Bologna, 8 settembre 1943 - 25 aprile 1945
Caduti della resistenza per la liberta e la giustizia per l onore e indipendenza della Patria'
'Bologna, 8 September 1943 - 25 April 1945
Fallen in resistance for freedom and justice for the honour and independence of the Fatherland'
