Former Militairy Airport Breslau - Gandau

This building is the old traffic tower of the then Airport Breslau - Gandau and was built in 1937.
From 1872 there was a training ground of the Prussian army here and an airport was built in 1910. After the Versailles Treaty it became a civilian airport. In the neighbourhood there were a number of Junkers factories, where the JU87 Stuka were built, there was also a kite school.
During the invasion of Poland, from August 26, 1939 to November 1939, Ju-52 were stationed here of IV./kg Z.b.v.2 (iv. Fighting group for special purposes 2) that would initially transport parachutists, but they were deployed for staff and stocks to transport.
When the front approached, Breslau and also the airport (with the Junkers factories in the neighbourhood) became the target of Russian attacks. During the siege of Breslau, this airport was the only connection to the outside world and stocks were flown in and injured.
After the war, after the area was cleared from bombs and the craters were filled, it was used by Lot until 1958. After the airport was closed, a new residential area was built and nowadays only the main building with the tower and a monument that still reminds us of the airport.
