Stumbling Stone Rivierdijk 72 (former A130)

This brass plaque (Stolperstein or Stumbling Stone), laid on 16-05-2025 commemorates:

*BAREND DE BRUIN (born 1919, Merwede hostage, arrested 16-5-1944, perished 7-11-1944 Merseburg)

This Stolperstein is here for a Merwede hostage, arrested in a raid, deported and succumbed during World War II. Merwede hostages were young men rounded up during a raid on 16 May 1944 in retaliation for two land guard members killed in a firefight with the resistance on the night of 9-10 May 1944.

‘Stolpersteine’ is an art project in Europe by Gunter Demnig to commemorate victims of National Socialism (Nazism). Stolpersteine (trip stones) are small, 10x10cm brass plaques placed in the pavement in front of a residence of (mostly Jewish) victims of the Nazis. Each plaque bears the victim's name, date of birth and their fate. In this way, Gunter Demnig gives an individual memorial to each victim. One stone, one name, one person. He quotes the Talmud: ‘A person is forgotten only when his or her name is forgotten.’
