On the Place du Marché stands this Sherman M4A3 tank. The tank belonged to the 9th Armoured Division, 2nd tank battalion, where it was the 2nd tank of the B-company.
The tank was situated at the Château of Clerveaux until 2019. On the occasion of 75 years of liberation of the municipality of Eijsden-Margraten (Netherlands), the tank was loaned to this municipality. For the first time in 63 ages, the tank was moved.
After these commemorative festivities, the tank was moved to the barracks in Bastogne to be restored. The tank was stripped, cleaned and repainted. In 2024, the tank was returned to Clerveaux. However, it was not put back in the garden of the Château, but in a more prominent location at Place du Marché.
The tank was involved in the fighting around Clervaux during the Battle of the Bulge on Dec. 17, 1944. The tank stood near the castle and fired incessantly at the German troops. After being hit (the shell ricocheted off the panster), the tank was abandoned by its crew. It remained where it was left until 1956. In 1956, it was towed by the Luxembourg Army to its position in the garden of the castle.
It was not until 2019 that he was moved again for the first time to return to this spot in 2024 after restoration.
