Monument General Monash

General Sir John Monash (1865-1931) was born in West Melbourne. Monash began a career as an engineer but became a part time soldier in 1887. At the outbreak of WW1, he was appointed to command the 4th Infantry Brigade. After the Gallipoli campaign, he was appointed to command the new 3rd Australian Division which fought at Messines and Passchendaele in 1917. By 1918, because of his great military skills, powerful intellect and inspiring leadership qualities he was appointed to command the Australian Corps.
The monument was initially proposed in 1932 and when accepted, the bronze was to be cast but was delayed because of WW2. It was unveiled in 1950 by the Governor General Mr McKell with the Prime Minister, Mr Menzies in attendance.
