At a side entrance of villa "Ter Elst" is a memorial stone for Michele Chimienti.
He was born on March 9, 1888 in Bari (Italy) but emigrated to the US.
In the First World War he was a soldier in the 316th Regiment of Engineers.
He was killed in action on October 31, 1918 in the garden of the villa and the then owner had a gravestone erected at the place where the soldier had died.
After the war he could be identified and in 1922 he was reburied at the American cemetery Flanders Field in Waregem.
After the gravestone had been lost for decades, the stone was found a few years ago and placed at its current location in 2003.
