East Battery Portsmouth

In the 1860s, the East and West Auxiliary batteries were built on each side of Southsea Castle to house larger guns facing the Solent. Between 1899 and 1901, the East Battery was upgraded for breech-loading guns at a cost of £16,670. By the early 20th century, it held two BL 6-inch Mark VII and two BL 9.2-inch Mark X guns, with two more 9.2-inch guns added during World War II. In the 1960s, the council partially demolished both batteries.
