The history of Jews in Marburg began in the Middle Ages. From 1861 to 1932, the Jewish population in the city increased from 74 to 325. Since the fourteenth century, the community had a synagogue, the newest of which was consecrated in 1897 on Universitätsstrasse.
During Kristallnacht on November 9-10, 1938, members of the SA set fire to the house of worship. The fire department arrived late and subsequently only prevented the fire from spreading to neighbouring buildings. Due to the risk of collapse, the remaining standing pillars and walls were torn down on November 10.
Since 2012, the site where the synagogue once stood has been home to a memorial garden featuring a model of the house of worship.
