Monument Emil Behring

Professor Emil von Behring (1854-1901), affiliated with the University of Marburg, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his discovery of a serum against diphtheria and tetanus. In December 1940, this monument in his honor was dedicated on a site in front of the Hygienic Institute of the University of Marburg. The dedication was accompanied by a massive display of Nazi symbolism, including Nazi flags and the Hitler salute.

The factory located on the outskirts of Marburg and named after the physician, Behringwerke AG, had to employ more personnel during World War II because the demand for the diphtheria vaccines produced there increased as the Wehrmacht inoculated its soldiers with them.
