Former War Tunnels Georgetown

During the Second World War, the area of the Penang Botanical Gardens was used by the Japanese for military purposes. Torpedoes were assembled and weapons and ammunition were stored there. For this purpose, 11 tunnels were dug in and around the garden. The tunnels, with everything in them, were only sealed off until 1987, but in that year they were filled with earth due to the risk of collapse. An information board near the 'Lily Pond' still commemorates the presence of two of these tunnels.
