Crash Site Warnford

On a hilltop in the field stands a sandstone column with engraved plaques commemorating the plane crash of 4th April 1944 in which 33 servicemen were killed during the “Dreme” glider exercise in the airborne forces.

The dark night with low cloud forced the pilots to fly low and without ambient light as the blackout was in force. Tragically the Stirling IV struck a tree east of Warnford Park. It continued with catastrophic damage and crashed near Romsey, killing the 6 crew.
The Horsa Glider crashed in the fields of Warnford Park killing all 27 servicemen on board.

One plaque gives some information about the crash, the other lists the names of the victims.
